From 30 September to 2 October, we attended Google Search Central Live Deep Dive Europe 2026 in Barcelona. We spent three days hearing directly from Google’s Search team and exchanging ideas with SEO professionals from across the industry.
The sessions showed us how much is changing in Google Search. They also reinforced why technical expertise and understanding what people need remain equally important.
Optimise for humans first.
It was a message that stayed with us throughout the event.
What We Learnt
One of the more interesting discussions focused on how Google understands what people are searching for.
In Google AI Mode, query fan-out can break a complex question into related searches, helping the system gather information from different sources before producing a response.
As search becomes more conversational, this gives Google more ways to respond to complex questions.
However, the presentations also brought us back to something familiar.
One encouraged businesses to use the language their customers naturally use. Another focused on content quality, highlighting the value of original information and the expertise behind it.
These messages reinforced why understanding search intent matters. It’s not simply about using the right keywords. Content needs to reflect what people want to know and provide useful answers.
The technical sessions also offered insight into how Google crawls and indexes websites. Meanwhile, SEO professionals shared examples of using AI to review large volumes of content and improve reporting.
What stood out was the role of human judgement. AI can make content reviews and reporting more efficient. However, reliable results still depend on clear instructions, accurate data and proper checks.
What’s Changed Since Barcelona?
Google has continued refining its AI search experience since the event.
On 15 October, Google announced improvements to how links and sources appear in AI Mode and AI Overviews. The changes aim to make it easier for users to explore the websites behind AI-generated responses.
For businesses, these changes offer more opportunities for people to explore the sources behind AI-generated answers. However, appearing in those answers doesn’t guarantee a website visit. Creating useful content that encourages further reading remains important.
As these experiences develop, creating original content that answers genuine questions remains important.
Bringing These Insights Into Our Work
The value of attending Google Search Central Live wasn’t simply learning about new features. It was gaining a clearer understanding of Google’s systems and seeing how other professionals put new technology to practical use.
The discussions gave us ideas for improving content reviews and reporting workflows. They also reinforced the importance of connecting SEO with the way websites are developed.
For our clients, this means continuing to focus on useful content, clear website structure and decisions informed by reliable data.
As search technology develops, effective SEO still depends on understanding what people need and ensuring websites can deliver that information.
We’ve taken the technical discussion further in How to Build a Better Website for AI Search. The article explains how website development and SEO can support visibility in traditional and AI-powered search.
